19, Unfazed And Hungry: The Mindset Behind Kartik Yadav’s Rise

The Kashi Rudras' title defence ended in the most agonising fashion on Thursday, when they fell one run short against the Noida Kings in a dramatic UPT20 League Eliminator at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow.

Chasing 155, Kashi finished on 153/8, bringing their campaign to an abrupt end. It was a night of fine margins, with the pressure of knockout cricket evident throughout the contest.

Yet amid the tension, one player once again embodied the composure that had defined Kashi's fightback through the latter stages of the tournament.

At just 19, left-arm spinner Kartik Yadav produced another outstanding spell, finishing with 1/10 from his four overs. On a surface where the Noida batters were expected to dictate terms, Kartik's ability to read the conditions and maintain control kept Kashi in the contest.

His performance was hardly a surprise to anyone who heard him speak before the Eliminator.

'Neither am I excited nor am I tensed'

Kartik entered the knockout game on the back of a match-winning spell against the table-topping Meerut Mavericks. His 3/12 performance helped Kashi secure their place in the playoffs and earned him the Player of the Match award.

The challenge was to reproduce that composure in a much higher-pressure situation.

When asked ahead of the Eliminator whether he was feeling the pressure of a do-or-die game, Kartik offered an answer that sounded remarkably mature for a player still only 19.

"Neither am I excited nor am I tensed. I'm just hungry to win as a team. Personally, I want us to win... We don't have to think too much. We don't have to pressure ourselves. We just have to stay cool and calm. We have to express ourselves."

That mindset became particularly relevant after the playoffs were moved from Kanpur to Lucknow at short notice because of persistent rain and a wet outfield.

Rather than dwelling on the change, Kartik spoke about the need to adapt quickly.

"We played in Lucknow before we came to Kanpur. If we go anywhere, we have to understand the conditions. You have to make quick decisions about the conditions... If we don't have a wicket in favour, how do we play? How do we play our team? We discuss it amongst ourselves."

He then put those words into practice.

Kartik immediately settled into the Lucknow conditions, restricting the Noida batting line-up and repeatedly denying them easy scoring opportunities. His four-over spell of 1/10 was among the most economical performances of the night.

It also capped an impressive tournament for the teenager, who finished the campaign with 10 wickets at an economy rate of 5.44.

The senior players who kept Kashi together

Kashi's season had been defined by swings in momentum.

After a promising start, the defending champions endured a four-match losing streak that put their title defence in serious jeopardy. They responded with consecutive victories to force their way into the top four, but their campaign ultimately ended in the closest possible fashion.

For a young player surrounded by experienced and established professionals, such a run could easily have become overwhelming.

Kartik instead credited the senior players, coaches and support staff with ensuring the pressure never reached the younger members of the squad.

"We were in a dull situation in the dressing room. But our seniors didn't let us know that we were losing. Our captains, coaches, staff and all our players were backing each other. Because we know what level of players we are. We know the standard of our team... We knew that we would come back."

That collective belief remained visible in the Eliminator.

Kashi's chase appeared to be slipping away before Abhishek Goswami's 45 off 33 and Shubham Chaubey's unbeaten 43 off 26, which included three sixes, dragged them within touching distance of an unlikely victory.

They ultimately fell one run short.

A player who puts the team before himself

Perhaps the clearest insight into Kartik's character came after his Player of the Match performance against Meerut.

There was no celebration. Instead, the teenager's priority was recovery.

"No, ma'am, there was no celebration. I just wanted to reach the hotel early and get some rest. It was our travel day today, so I didn't celebrate much."

Even when asked about the expectations created by his 3/12 spell, Kartik quickly shifted the conversation away from individual achievement.

"I try to contribute as much as I can to the team as an all-rounder. If I don't get a day off, I'll do it in batting. If I don't get a day off, I'll do it in bowling. If I don't get a day off, I'll do it as a fielder. But I want to contribute to the team so that it wins in the future."

It is an attitude that explains why his influence on Kashi's campaign extended beyond his wicket tally.

He has been willing to contribute wherever the team needs him, while maintaining the same calm approach whether things are going well or badly.

From UPT20 to the Ranji Trophy

The end of Kashi's UPT20 campaign leaves Kartik with little time to dwell on the disappointment.

The Ranji Trophy season awaits in October, bringing an entirely different challenge for a young spinner who has already shown that he can operate in the longer format.

Last winter, Kartik bowled 31.3 overs against Tamil Nadu and claimed an impressive five-wicket haul for 103 runs.

The transition from four-over T20 spells to the patience and endurance required in first-class cricket is substantial. For Kartik, though, the principle remains simple: adapt to the demands of the format.

"Ranji Trophy is coming up. I don't have to work on my selection. I'll work according to the format."

Kashi Rudras may have seen their title defence end with a one-run defeat, but Kartik Yadav leaves the tournament with something more significant than a collection of impressive figures.

At 19, he has already shown an ability to remain composed when the game around him is anything but. For a team that survived a turbulent campaign only to fall agonisingly short at the final hurdle, that calm became one of its defining qualities.
