1st T20I: Evin Lewis hits 5 sixes in Stuart Binny over, misses Yuvraj Singh's record

Fort Lauderdale (USA), Aug 27: West Indies' opener Evin Lewis came very close to equalling Indian batsman Yuvraj Singh's 6 sixes in an over record during the 1st Twenty20 International here today (August 27) at the Central Broward Regional Park Stadium Turf Ground.

Left-handed Lewis smashed 5 sixes in a row off Indian paceman Stuart Binny but his attempt for the 6th ended with just a single.

Evin Lewis looks skywards after scoring a century in the 1st T20I against India

The 24-year-old Lewis was playing in only his 2nd T20I. He came as a replacement for the injured Chris Gayle and he made a huge impact with a century (100 off 49 balls, 5x4, 9x6). In his debut against Afghanistan (World T20 2016), Lewis was dismissed for a 7-ball duck.

Binny was introduced into the attack by captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni in the 11th over. West Indies were already off to a flying start, thanks to Lewis and Johnson Charles.

The first 2 balls were hit for sixes while Binny delivered a wide off the third. The next three balls diappeared over the boundaryline and expectations were high on Lewis equalling Yuvraj, but it did not. Yuvraj is the only batsman to hit 6 sixes in an over in T20Is.

Lewis' attempted shot for a 6th six ended up going to long-on and he took a single. It was low full-toss from Binny.

Ravi Shastri, who was the man doing commentary when Yuvraj hit England fast bowler Stuart Broad for 6 sixes in World Twenty20 2007 in Durban (South Africa), was again in the TV commentary box along with former India captain Sunil Gavaskar.

After Lewis sent the ball for 2 sixes, Gavaskar asked Shastri, "Will it be 6 sixes?". But it was not to be. Shastri himself has hit 6 sixes in a first-class game. 32 runs were plundered in that over from Binny.

Sir Garfield Sobers of West Indies was the first man to score 6 sixes in an over, in county cricket. Herschelle Gibbs of South Africa did it in a One Day International. England's Jordan Clark (in county cricket) is the other in the elite list of 5. Gibbs and Yuvraj are the 2 batsmen to achieve the feat in international cricket.
