2 Countries That Hosted Champions Trophy Without Their National Teams Participating

The ICC Champions Trophy is a total of 27 years old and the ICC introduced this short-format cricket tournament with the goal of generating funds to support the development of cricket in non-Test playing nations.

This event, initially designed as a knockout competition, ensured a quick and engaging format while maintaining the prestige of the Cricket World Cup. Given that all full ICC members participated, the tournament earned the nickname "Mini-World Cup."

Champions Trophy

The knockout structure was chosen to keep the tournament brief, preventing scheduling conflicts with that of the World Cup. Over time, this event evolved into what is now known as the Champions Trophy, serving as one of cricket's premier international competitions.

Till now there has been only two instances, where the host nation of the tournament didn't get to see their country play despite having the hosting rights. In 1998 and 2025, Bangladesh and UAE were the hosts respectively but their national teams didn't feature in the tournament. Here is why:-

1) Bangladesh: The ICC awarded the tournament to Bangladesh as part of its efforts to promote cricket in the country and expand the sport's global reach. Despite hosting the event, the Bangla Tigers did not participate because they were not yet a Test-playing nation at the time.

However, they had shown promise on the international stage by winning the 1997 ICC Trophy, which secured their qualification for the 1999 Cricket World Cup. This decision highlighted the ICC's strategy of using major tournaments to develop cricket in emerging nations, even if the host country itself was not yet eligible to compete. Bangladesh eventually gained Test status in 2000, marking a significant milestone in their cricketing journey.

2) UAE: UAE weren't the actual host of the 2025 edition, Pakistan were actually named as the hosts. But due to strained political relationships between India and Pakistan, the former refused to travel across the border citing terrorist attack threats in the country. After a lot of meetings and discussions, finally it was decided that the Men in Blue will play all their matches in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Even if they reach the final, India will also play the summit clash in Dubai itself.

Since the middle-eastern country was made the co-host to accommodate the Indian side, quite naturally it has nothing to do with their national team and thus they didn't feature.
