2019 to 2026 is Golden Period for Indian Cricket, says ICC Chairman Jay Shah

By MyKhel Staff

Indian cricket has been on the rise for the past few decades, and the recent flurry of ICC tournament victories has been a testament to its emergence.

And acknowledging the fact, International Cricket Council (ICC) chairman Jay Shah has recognized the last seven years as the Golden Period of Indian Cricket.

2019 to 2026 are Golden Years for Indian Cricket says ICC Chairman Jay Shah

The Indian team recently won the T20 World Cup 2026, thus becoming the first team in history to win consecutive T20 titles. In between the T20 World Cup wins, the Indian team also won the Champions Trophy in 2025, while the Women's Team won the ODI World Cup in 2025 on home soil.

And Jay Shah, during a speech at the SJFI Convention 2026, acknowledged the amazing run of Indian cricket in recent years.

"2019 to 2026, this period proved to be very important for BCCI and India. We won two U19 Women's tournaments. We won two U19 Men's tournaments. We were runners-up twice in WTC. We were runners-up once in the ODI World Cup. We won the T20 World Cup twice. And we also won the Champions Trophy. That is why the period from 2019 to 2026 proved to be golden years for all of us," Shah said.

The former BCCI secretary also hailed the Indian team's emergence in the early 2000s, reminiscing about the 25th anniversary of India's famous Eden Test win against Australia, a match which is etched in the memories for VVS Laxman's stellar 281 and Harbhajan Singh's briliant bowling. India, in that match, came to win after suffering a Follow-On in the first innings.

The ICC chairman also thanked the media for its role in the coverage of Indian cricket and bestowed with praises before advising the journalists to prepare for the upcoming tournaments, which includes Commonwealth Games and the Olympics.

After the T20 World Cup, the focus now shifts to IPL 2026, which will start from March 26 as defending champions RCB take on SRH in the opener at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium.
