35 Centuries To His Name- But None At Lord’s? Sunil Gavaskar’s Curious Record

As legendary Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar turns 76 today, fans across the world are celebrating the birthday of one of the finest batters to ever grace the game. Known for his impeccable technique and remarkable consistency against some of the most feared bowling attacks of his time, Gavaskar's records remain benchmarks in Test cricket.

Yet, surprisingly, the "Little Master" never managed to score a Test century at the most iconic venue in cricket - Lord's.

Sunil Gavaskar

Despite amassing 34 Test hundreds in his illustrious career, a three-figure score at Lord's eluded Gavaskar. He played five Test matches at the historic ground between 1974 and 1986, but his highest score there was 59, which came in the drawn Test of 1979. Lord's, often considered the "Home of Cricket," has seen many greats etch their names onto the honours board - but not Gavaskar. He remains part of a rare group of all-time greats, including Sachin Tendulkar, Brian Lara, and Ricky Ponting, who also never scored a century at this hallowed venue.

Coincidentally, on Gavaskar's 76th birthday, India are currently playing the third Test against England at Lord's, with the five-match series locked at 1-1. India head into this Test high on confidence after a massive win in the second match at Edgbaston, where Shubman Gill and Akash Deep starred with bat and ball respectively. With Jasprit Bumrah returning and the team riding on solid batting form, all eyes are now on whether India can take the lead at a venue where their past record hasn't been very flattering.

While 1983 World Cup winner, Sunil Gavaskar may never have reached three figures at Lord's, his legacy as a pioneer of Indian batting dominance overseas remains untarnished. He was the first player to cross 10,000 runs in Test cricket and continues to be a voice of authority and inspiration in the cricketing world.

As India take on England today at the ground that challenged him, it's fitting to remember Gavaskar's lasting impact - not just in centuries, but in courage, class, and unmatched contribution to Indian cricket.
