Kanpur, Sep 22: It was a historic match here today (September 22) at Green Park Stadium as India played their 500th Test. Virat Kohli led the side as the hosts faced New Zealand in the opening game of the 3-Test rubber.

India played their first ever Test in June 1932 against England at Lord's. They started off on a losing note. Since then in 499 Tests before today, they have won 129 and lost 157. 212 contests ended in draw while 1 was tied. (Honoured to lead India: Kohli)
CK Naydu was India's first Test captain and now Kohli is the 32nd leader of the team. Mahendra Singh Dhoni is the most successful Indian Test skipper with 27 wins from 60 matches. He retired from the longer format in 2014.

On the historic occasion of 500th Test, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) honoured former skippers. Sachin Tendulkar, Dhoni, Sourav Ganguly, Kapil Dev, Dilip Vengsarkar, Kris Srikkanth, Ravi Shastri, Mohammad Azharuddin, Anil Kumble were felicitated before the start of the Test.
