80 runs, 79 balls, 6 dismissals: Bhuvneshwar Kumar owns Shubman Gill rivalry in IPL

Royal Challengers Bengaluru pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar once again came out on top in one of the IPL's most one-sided individual contests, dismissing Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill for the sixth time in their IPL rivalry during Qualifier 1 on Tuesday.

Gill arrived in Dharamsala as one of the form batters of IPL 2026, but his stay at the crease was cut short by a familiar opponent. Bhuvneshwar produced a wobble-seam delivery that jagged back into the right-hander and crashed into the stumps, handing RCB an early breakthrough in the high-stakes playoff clash.

The wicket further strengthened Bhuvneshwar's remarkable record against the GT skipper.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar vs Shubman Gill: IPL head-to-head

Stat Record
Innings 14
Runs 80
Balls Faced 79
Dismissals 6
Average 13.33
Strike Rate 101.26

The numbers underline just how effectively the veteran seamer has contained one of the league's most prolific top-order batters. Gill has scored only 80 runs from 79 deliveries against Bhuvneshwar in the IPL, striking at just over 101 while averaging 13.33.

For context, Gill entered Qualifier 1 with more than 600 runs in IPL 2026 at a strike rate comfortably above 150, making the contrast even more striking.

The dismissal also continued a trend that has followed Gill throughout his IPL career. No bowler has dismissed him more often in the competition than Bhuvneshwar, whose ability to move the new ball both ways has repeatedly troubled the Gujarat captain during the powerplay.

With six dismissals in just 14 meetings, Bhuvneshwar is removing Gill once every 13 deliveries on average - an extraordinary return against one of T20 cricket's premier batters.

For RCB, the breakthrough could hardly have come at a better time. Gill has been the cornerstone of Gujarat's batting lineup this season, and removing him early significantly boosts Bengaluru's chances of securing a direct place in the IPL 2026 final.
