8 centuries missed for 88 runs! India's misfortunes with Centuries in World Cup 2023

India have been a force in this ICC World Cup 2023, but there is an area, where the Indian team would have loved to have a bit more luck.

Yes, it has been a stellar campaign for Rohit Sharma and his team so far. The Indian team has steamrolled all of their opponents thus far in this tournament. With seven wins out of the first seven matches, India has now qualified for the World Cup semi-finals and eyeing for glory after twelve years.

India

The batting of the Indian team has been excellent. The star-studded lineup of Indian batters have scored a plethora of runs. Captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and all the other players have amassed a lot of runs in the tournament and are looking a formidable unit for their opponents.

But an area where India have lacked so far in their batting is the number of centuries. Despite all of their showing, the Indian batters have so far managed two centuries in this tournament.

India's first century of the tournament came from Rohit Sharma's bat against Afghanistan, then it was Virat Kohli's turn to get a three-figure score against Bangladesh. But that has been all in terms of scoring centuries for India so far in the tournament.

While the likes of South Africa have already scored eight centuries, the lack of three-figure scores for India is not alarming, but something that the spectators and players would love a bit more of.

India Lack of Centuries - 88 Runs, 8 Centuries

India have been devoid of eight centuries in this tournament, and in each cases, players have scored beyond 80 but have failed to convert it to a hundred. In total, Indian batters have fallen short of 88 runs on those eight occasions.

Virat Kohli has been a victim of that three times. The Indian stalwart has been dismissed for 85 against Australia, then 95 against New Zealand, and 88 against Sri Lanka.

Captain Rohit Sharma has also fallen short of a century twice, getting dismissed for 86 and 87 in this tournament against Pakistan and England respectively.

Kohli Gill Shreyas vs Sri Lanka

KL Rahul, who has been a revelation in this tournament, fell short of his century by just 3 runs and remained unbeaten in the first match against Australia. Rahul scored a match-winning 97 and was visibly disappointed when he fell short of his century in Chennai.

Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer have their name on the list as well, as the duo failed to score their century against Sri Lanka. Gill fell on 92, while Shreyas Iyer's breezy inning of 82 couldn't taste the century rejoice as well.

In most cases, the reason for India's lack of century has been team above individual records. On all these occasions, players have decided to up the ante despite being close to personal milestones, which speaks volumes about the team.

But the Indian batters would love to get the rabbit out of the hat and get their elusive centuries in the coming matches.
