A Man With Lion’s Passion: Gautam Gambhir's Tribute to Virat Kohli After Test Retirement

Virat Kohli's sudden announcement to retire from Test cricket on Monday may have caught fans and experts off guard, but India's head coach Gautam Gambhir wasn't among the surprised.

With insider access to the Indian camp, Gambhir had a sense that Kohli's decision was imminent, especially after reports surfaced about the star batter's reluctance to travel to England for the upcoming Test series.

Taking to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Gambhir offered a heartfelt message for the former India skipper: "A man with lion's passion! Will miss u cheeks...."

The two cricket stalwarts share a long history, dating back to their days as teammates in the Indian dressing room. Their last stint together in red-ball cricket came during India's 2020-21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy tour in Australia - a series India lost 1-3.

Kohli, in his retirement post, expressed the deep emotional bond he shares with Test cricket: "It's been 14 years since I first wore the baggy blue in Test cricket. Honestly, I never imagined the journey this format would take me on. It's tested me, shaped me, and taught me lessons I'll carry for life."

He added: "There's something deeply personal about playing in whites. The quiet grind, the long days, the small moments that no one sees but that stay with you forever. As I step away from this format, it's not easy - but it feels right. I've given it everything I had, and it's given me back so much more than I could've hoped for."

Kohli and Gambhir were part of several iconic moments for Indian cricket. They were both members of the victorious 2011 World Cup squad and recently celebrated another title together - the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, where Kohli starred as a player and Gambhir steered the team as head coach.

Interestingly, Gambhir once made a brief comeback to the Indian Test team in 2016 under Kohli's leadership during home series against New Zealand and England, further adding layers to their shared legacy.

While Kohli will no longer be seen donning the whites, the mutual respect between two of India's most passionate cricketers was evident in Gambhir's message - a simple yet powerful acknowledgment of a remarkable journey.
