AB de Villiers breaks Sourav Ganguly's 12-year-old record

Durban, Aug 27: South Africa's captain AB de Villiers last night (August 26) broke Sourav Ganguly's record during the 3rd ODI against New Zealand at Kingsmead.

The 31-year-old De Villiers, on Wednesday, became the fastest to score 8,000 ODI runs, surpassing former India skipper Ganguly.

De Villiers, who struck a 48-ball 64 during the series-clinching 62-run victory in 3rd ODI, reached the milestone when on 19. He got there with a boundary.

The South African needed 182 innings to cross 8,000-run mark while Ganguly took 200 visits to the crease. The record had stood in the Indian left-hander's name since 2002.

De Villiers is also the fastest in terms of the time taken to the milestone from his debut game. The right-hander, who played his first ODI on February 2, 2005, needed 10 years and 205 days to reach there. Ganguly took 10 years and 302 days (from January 11, 1992 to November 9, 2002).

The South African now has 8,045 runs in 190 ODIs (182 innings). He has hit 10 hundreds and 4 half centuries. De Villiers also holds the fastest ODI hundred and quickest to 150 records.
