AB De Villiers Questions Stats-Based Comparison In Sport To Judge Players Performance

Former South Africa and Royal Challengers Bangalore cricket AB De Villiers has questioned stat-based comparison to judge a player or a team's performance in any sport as there a multiple factors that come into play in a game.

During a Wimbledon 2023 roud of 16 match between Novak Djokovic and Hubert Hurkacz, legendary John McEnore, who was on commentary had questioned stats to determine the winner of the match. Although McEnroe has earned a lot of slack for his commentary, De Villiers backed him for the stats comment.

De Villiers took to social media, questioning the use of stats in comparing a player's value or even winning percentage prediction, which has become a norm in every sport these days.

"Listening to John McEnroe commentating in the Djoko/Hurkacz game. Love how he questions stats! Saying "who are these people?? Who are "they" we're talking about here?" I have a very similar view!," De Villiers Tweeted.

He also questioned if the people who use these stats consider the conditions and pressure the player is under when making these comparisons.

"How are these people telling us how valuable a player is? Or what the win percentage is? Do they understand every inch that goes into a performance. Different conditions? Weather? Pressure? Do me a favour," added De Villiers.

De Villiers further added that there is a similar kind of comparison that happens in cricket, where players of different skill sets are compared based on stats.

"The same thing happens in Cricket! Comparing players with different skill sets, who play in different positions with different pressure🤷‍♂️not cool," De Villiers posted in another tweet.

Some users on Twitter also backed De Villiers, stating the comparison of players from different era or generations is also silly, while some suggested a player has to perform in all conditions to be considered a great in any sport. Here are some reactions to De Villiers' take:
