Abhishek Bachchan Backs ETPL as a Global Launchpad for Emerging Cricket Talent

London, July 23: Bollywood actor Abhishek Bachchan believes the European T20 Premier League (ETPL) has the power to transform cricket in emerging markets and uncover the next generation of global stars.

As a passionate sports entrepreneur and co-owner of one of the league's franchises, the actor sees the ETPL, set to debut in 2026, as more than just another T20 tournament.

Abhishek Bachchan Backs ETPL as a Global Launchpad for Emerging Cricket Talent

With matches slated across Ireland, Scotland, and the Netherlands, Bachchan views the league as a long-overdue platform to spotlight local talent, inspire youth, and expand the sport's global footprint at a pivotal moment in cricket's evolution.

In an exclusive conversation with the BBC, Bachchan, who co-owns one of the flagship franchises, opened up about his growing involvement in the world of cricket through the upcoming ETPL.

As someone with deep sporting roots - both as a fan and team owner in the Indian kabaddi and football leagues - the senior actor's foray into cricket through ETPL marks a natural evolution of his sporting journey. But as he explains, his ambitions go far beyond the commercial.

ETPL: Platform for Talent, Not Just Entertainment

"When the European T20 League came about, I saw a market primed for a professional T20 league. I truly feel we can make a difference here, and that's why I chose this as my foray into proper cricket," Bachchan shared.

With Ireland, Scotland, and the Netherlands being established ICC members and known for producing surprise results on the world stage, Bachchan believes these nations are ripe for investment in cricket infrastructure and professional exposure.

"These are World Cup-playing teams. They've been giant killers. But what they lack is a structured league to groom and showcase their talent. That's what ETPL can become-a launchpad for local players to rise through the ranks and shine globally," he said. He envisions ETPL not just as another league, but as a transformative movement in European cricket.

Ambitious Vision for Global Talent and Women's Cricket

According to Bachchan, the ETPL aims to combine elite competition with inclusive development. "We are committed to world-class gameplay that's on par with the best leagues. We aim to attract top global names. This is cricket as you have never seen it," he said.

Importantly, Bachchan emphasised that ETPL isn't just a men's tournament. He confirmed that the consortium behind the league also holds rights for a women's edition, and plans to roll it out within the first three to five years. "I'm biased, but I hope some of our Indian girls are part of it," he smiled.

IPL: A Revolution in Indian Cricket

Bachchan reflected on how Indian cricket changed forever with the advent of the IPL, describing it as a "social leveller."

"The IPL changed lives. Before it, only the top 16 players in the country had a realistic chance at a professional career. Now, talented youngsters from across India, regardless of background, have a legitimate path forward," he noted.

He also praised the BCCI's role in building a brand that created "superstars for children to idolise," ensuring that cricket continues to remain a national unifier across geography and class.

Breaking Regional Dominance, Building Diversity

The actor also pointed out how the IPL diluted the traditional dominance of Mumbai cricket, allowing players from smaller cities and states to come to the fore. "Yes, Mumbai was the powerhouse, but look at the players we have now-from Ranchi, Delhi, Gujarat, Assam. The landscape has shifted. The IPL has truly democratized cricket in India."

The Road Ahead for ETPL

As ETPL gears up for its grand debut in 2026, Bachchan's involvement brings not just star power but vision, passion, and intent. In a world saturated with leagues and tournaments, the success of ETPL may lie in exactly what he emphasised - creating a meaningful platform for overlooked talent.

If executed with that purpose, the ETPL could become not just Europe's answer to the IPL, but a genuine springboard for global cricketing potential.
