Abhishek Nayar, a former Mumbai cricketer, has recently been appointed as the new assistant coach of the Indian cricket team. He joins forces with the newly-appointed head coach Gautam Gambhir as Team India prepares for their limited-overs tour of Sri Lanka.
Born on October 8, 1983, in Secunderabad, Abhishek Nayar has had a distinguished domestic cricket career. A left-handed batsman and a right-arm medium pacer, Nayar made his first-class debut for Mumbai in the 2005-06 season. Over the years, he became a vital player for Mumbai, contributing significantly to their multiple Ranji Trophy victories.

Nayar's ability to perform under pressure was particularly noted in crucial matches. His resilient batting and useful medium-pace bowling made him a valuable all-rounder in domestic cricket. In his first-class career, Nayar amassed over 5,700 runs and took more than 150 wickets, showcasing his versatility and consistency.
Nayar's cricketing journey also included stints in the Indian Premier League (IPL), where he played for several franchises, including Mumbai Indians, Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings), Pune Warriors India, and Rajasthan Royals. However, it was his role off the field that truly highlighted his cricketing acumen.
Nayar served as the batting coach for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), where he worked closely with Gautam Gambhir. He even worked as the head coach of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) franchise Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR), co-owned by the KKR franchise. His tenure at KKR was marked by the development of young talent and a focus on enhancing the performance of the team's batting lineup.
The young generation of cricketers at KKR are said to be the byproducts of Nayar's hard work. The likes of Rinku Singh, Angkrish Raghuvanshi, and others have credited the former cricketer for helping improve his game.
Abhishek Nayar's association with Gautam Gambhir has been a fruitful one. Their professional relationship, established during their time at KKR, laid the foundation for a successful coaching partnership. Gambhir, known for his strategic mindset and leadership skills, found a trusted ally in Nayar, whose technical knowledge and mentoring abilities complemented Gambhir's vision.
As he joins Gautam Gambhir for the tour of Sri Lanka, the duo aims to bring their combined expertise to enhance Team India's performance in the limited-overs series. Their immediate task will be to prepare the squad for the challenging conditions in Sri Lanka, focusing on strategy, skill development, and mental preparation.
