Abhishek Sharma vs Sanju Samson - Who looks set to get a chance in India vs South Africa Super 8 Match?

As India gears up for a high-stakes Super 8 clash against South Africa at the Narendra Modi Stadium on February 22, 2026, a major selection headache looms over the opening slot.

The debate centers on the young sensation Abhishek Sharma, currently struggling through a rare slump, and the experienced Sanju Samson, who is knocking on the doors for a comeback.

Abhishek Sharma vs Sanju Samson - Who looks set to get a chance in India vs South Africa Super 8 Match

India enters the Super 8s after a flawless group stage result-wise, but the top order has looked fragile. The primary concern is Abhishek Sharma. Despite being the No. 1 ranked T20I batter globally for much of the past year, Abhishek has had a "horrific" start to the 2026 World Cup, recording three consecutive ducks against USA, Pakistan, and the Netherlands.

Sanju Samson or Abhishek Sharma - Who will Play vs South Africa?

Sanju Samson remains a fan favorite but has struggled for consistency himself. In his most recent T20I series against New Zealand in January 2026, Samson managed only 46 runs in five innings at a disappointing average of 9.20. However, his supporters argue that his experience and ability to handle high-pace bowling-a specialty of the South African attack-make him a safer bet for a crucial knockout-style game.

Despite the string of ducks for Abhishek Sharma, the Indian management seems inclined to stick with Abhishek. Captain Suryakumar Yadav recently dismissed concerns, stating: "I worry about those who worry about Abhishek... the team wants him to play his natural game."

Abhishek Sharma provides the much-needed aggression at the top and being a left-hander provides advantage of a left-right combination at the top, which is crucial against the South African pace duo of Rabada and Jansen.

If India decides that the "high-risk" approach is too dangerous in Ahmedabad, Samson becomes the logical choice. Samson is technically superior against high-velocity short-pitched bowling, which South Africa will likely use as a weapon. If Abhishek is retained at the top, Samson could still replace Tilak Varma in the middle order to break the "left-hander monotony" in the lineup.

While the fans are divided, Abhishek Sharma is likely to get at least one more chance against the Proteas. His ability to hit the ground running is too valuable for the current Indian T20 setup to discard after a few bad outings. However, Sanju Samson is breathing down his neck, and another failure for Abhishek could see the Kerala star taking the field in the subsequent Super 8 fixtures.
