ACC Men's U19 Asia Cup 2024: India U19 Defeat Japan U19 by Huge Margin to Revive Semifinal Hopes

By MyKhel Staff

India U19 kept their semifinal aspirations alive with a resounding 211-run victory over Japan U19 in a must-win Group A encounter at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium during the ACC Men's U19 Asia Cup 2024.

This commanding performance underscored India's determination to bounce back after a narrow defeat to Pakistan U19 in their opening match. Opting to bat, India U19 showcased a stellar batting display led by captain Mohammad Amaan, whose unbeaten 122 anchored the innings.

Amaan's composure and calculated aggression set the foundation, supported by Karthikeya KP's quick-fire 57 and Ayush Mhatre's solid 54. Together, they propelled India to a tournament-high 339/6, the third-highest score in U19 Asia Cup history. The final overs saw fireworks from Hardik Raj, whose 12-ball 25 added a crucial finishing touch, with 27 runs coming off the last two overs.

Japan U19 faced an uphill battle chasing 340 and started cautiously. Openers Hugo Kelly (50) and Nihar Parmar (14) put up a 50-run partnership, but the chase lost momentum as the Indian spinners tightened their grip. Hardik Raj broke the opening stand, while Karthikeya KP's variations troubled the Japanese batters, dismissing skipper Koji Hardgrave-Abe and Timothy Moore.

Kelly's patient half-century was a highlight for Japan, but his dismissal to Hardik Raj's sharp stumping ended any resistance. Charles Hinze's unbeaten 30 was the only other notable contribution as Japan struggled against disciplined Indian bowling. Karthikeya KP and Hardik Raj finished with three and two wickets, respectively, while Yudhajit Guha's pace added pressure.

Japan U19 limped to 128/8 in their 50 overs, unable to match the required scoring rate. India's clinical performance reinforced their dominance, with the bowlers and fielders complementing the batters' efforts seamlessly.

With this win, India U19 sets up a high-stakes virtual quarterfinal against UAE U19, who also have one win in the group. The match will determine the second semifinalist from Group A, joining Pakistan U19, Sri Lanka U19, and Bangladesh U19 in the knockout stage. India's balanced performance against Japan positions them as strong contenders in their next clash and beyond.
