By MyKhel Staff

Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Rashid Khan starred as Afghanistan registered a massive 177-run victory in the second ODI on Friday (September 20) at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates.

After Gurbaz century, Azmatullah Omarzai's quickfire knock and Rahmat Shah fifty powered Afghanistan to 311/4 in their allotted 50 overs, Rashid bamboozled the Proteas with a fifer and reduced them to 134 all out to seal their most high-profile series win.

On Wednesday (September 18), Afghanistan recorded their first-ever win against South Africa, and two days later, the Afghan claimed an unassailable lead in the three-match ODI series as the Proteas batting collapsed in both the matches.

South Africa batting unit failed to deliver in both the matches, losing their first seven wickets for 36 in the series opener, and their last seven wickets for the same amount of runs in the second ODI.

Opting to bat, Gurbaz (105 off 110 balls) smashed his seventh century in the 50-over format, while Omarzai scored an unbeaten 86 off just 50 balls with 6 sixes and 5 fours. Rashid then returned to blow away South Africa in the chase. Here is a look at some of the records and milestones from the match:

Gurbaz equals Kohli for unique feat

Gurbaz equalled with legendary Indian batter Virat Kohli, having made second-most hundreds in ODI format before turning 23. Gurbaz scored his seventh ODI hundred and is now one behind India great Sachin Tendulkar and South Africa's Quinton de Kock, who had eight ODI tons before turning 23.

The 22-year-old now also has the most ODI hundreds for Afghanistan, surpassing the tally of former wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Shahzad, who had scored 6 hundreds in the format. Rahmat and Ibrahim Zadran follow the pair with 5 centuries each to their name.

The leg-spinner, who battled hamstring issues, bettered the feat of former South Africa pacer Vernon Philander (4 for 12) with figures of 5 for 19 to register the best bowling figures in ODI format by a birthday boy. This was also his fifth 5-wicket haul in ODIs.

After Omarzai ended the opening stand with the dismissal of South Africa skipper Temba Bavuma, Rashid accounted for the wickets of Toni de Zorzi, Aiden Markram, Tristan Stubbs, Kyle Verreynne and Willem Mulder.

Largest margin win for Afghanistan in ODI

With a 177-run victory, Afghanistan recorded their biggest win by margin of runs in the 50-over game, surpassing their previous best of 154-run win which came against Zimbabwe in 2018 at the same venue in Sharjah.

This is also the fifth biggest margin defeat by runs for South Africa. The Proteas, who are missing some key players in the series, had recorded their biggest defeat in the ODI format against India in the 2023 World Cup in Kolkata.
