Heinrich Klaasen has been left out of South Africa's playing 11 for their Champions Trophy 2025 opener against Afghanistan at the National Stadium in Karachi, Pakistan on Friday (February 21).
Ryan Rickelton was named the wicketkeeper in the team sheet, while skipper Temba Bavuma did not provide any update on Klaasen's exclusion from the team to face Afghanistan during the toss, leaving fans and experts surprised about the star keeper-batter's absence.

However, reports later emerged revealing the reason for Klaasen missing out on a spot in the Protea playing 11, which also did not include the likes of Tabraiz Shamsi, Tristan Stubbs and Corbin Bosch. Here is why Klaasen is not in the SA XI:
According to updates issued, the wicketkeeper-batter has only been left out as a precautionary measure due to left elbow soft tissue injury. There is still no official word on his absence nor on his return date.
South Africa, who already suffered injury blows before the tournament with pacers Anrich Nortje and Gerald Coetzee missing out due to injuries, will hope their star wicketkeeper is fit and available for their remaining matches in the eight-team ICC tournament.
The Proteas will next face Australia in a Group B match at the Pindi Stadium in Rawalpindi on Tuesday (February 25) before they return to Karachi to play their final group stage match against England on March 1 at the National Stadium.
While those fixtures await, South Africa will need to beat dark-horses Afghanistan in their campaign opener to keep their hopes alive of winning an ICC event, having come close and missed out in the recent few tournaments.
Rickelton, who may have retained his place even if Klaasen was fit, dons the wicketkeeping gloves as Bavuma revaled that the Proteas have opted for one spinner and three seamers in their playing 11 for the Champions Trophy opener.
Ryan Rickelton (wicketkeeper), Tony de Zorzi, Temba Bavuma (captain), Rassie van der Dussen, Aiden Markram, David Miller, Wiaan Mulder, Marco Jansen, Keshav Maharaj, Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi.
