Kabul, January 2: Afghanistan Cricket Board (ABC) on Tuesday (January 2) announced the extension of head coach Jonathan Trott's contract for a further year, rewarding him for making significant contributions to the team's progress and development.
The former England batter Trott had taken over as head coach of the Afghanistan senior men's national team in July 2022, but his 18-month tenure came to an end in 2023.

"Afghanistan Cricket Board confirms the extension of the contract with Jonathan Trott, the National Team's Head Coach, for the year 2024. The decision comes in after his successful 18-month tenure, during which he made significant contributions to the team's progress and development," the ACB said in an official statement.
Under his guidance, Afghanistan achieved remarkable success and secured several victories. This included the team's impressive performance at the Asia Cup 2022 (T20), it's maiden international win, a T20I series victory against Pakistan and their first-ever ODI series win over Bangladesh.
Afghanistan also enjoyed a successful campaign at the last year's ODI World Cup where they beat Pakistan, England, Sri Lanka and the Netherlands. They also came very close to beating the eventual champions Australia until Glenn Maxwell took the game away from their grasps.
Despite the failure of beating Australia, the Afghanistan had registered wins over three other former champions, including the defending champions at the ODI show-piece event in India.
Afghanistan are currently in the United Arab Emirates for a three-match T20I series against the host team. Following this, they are scheduled to travel to India, for a three-match T20I series from January 11-17.
The team has a packed year ahead with various bilateral tours lined up, including their participation in the T20 World Cup scheduled for June in the Caribbean and USA.
As per ACB, Trott expressed his pleasure on the extension of his contract and stated that he is looking forward to spending more time with the squad and building on performances of the recently held ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023.
