Afghanistan will be desperate for a huge win to stay alive in the Asia Cup 2023 when they face Sri Lanka in the final first round Group B match at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, Pakistan on Tuesday (September 5).
Hashmatullah Shahidi's Afghanistan fell to Bangladesh by 89 runs in their tournament opener, failing to chase down a mammoth target of 335. Now, they go up against Dasun Shanaka's Sri Lanka, who are fresh from a 5-wicket win over Shakib Al Hasan's side.

This will be the eleventh meeting between the two nations, who will battle to book one spot in the Super Four stage. As it stands, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka on 2 points, are well-placed to progress, but Afghanistan can sneak in with a 70-run win or a run chase within 36 overs.
The two nations have so far met in 10 one day international matches so far with Sri Lanka holding an advantage of 6-3 against Afghanistan, while one match has ended in No Result.
In the two 3-match bilateral series hosted by Sri Lanka, the first meeting ended 1-1 in 2022 after one match was washed out, while the hosts won the series 2-1 in 2023 despite losing the opener.
In neutral venues, where both sides have clashed in the World Cup, Sri Lanka has won both the times in Otago Oval during the 2015 World Cup and the Sophia Gardens in 2019 World Cup. The two sides have also clashed two times in Asia Cup.
In 2014 Asia Cup, Sri Lanka beat Afghanistan by 129 runs. In 2018 edition, Afghanistan secured a thumping 91-run win over Sri Lanka. Here is a look at the results between SL and AFG.

The toss will be crucial as teams will look to get runs on the board and make the opposition fielder work hard in the scorching heat on a flat wicket, which saw Bangladesh post 334. So, Afghanistan would have learnt from that defeat.
It’s expected to be an even contest with Sri Lanka missing their star bowler in Wanindu Hasaranga, but the team batting first despite any player’s absence is likely to win the contest. Going by history, Sri Lanka start favourites and an under-pressure Afghanistan may come up short if they chase.
