Sri Lanka led by Kusal Mendis head into the match on the back of two successive wins that stopped a three-match losing streak, while Hashmatullah Shahidi’s Afghanistan, also possess a similar record of 2 wins and 3 defeats in their five outings in the show-piece tournament.

In the most recent outing, returning Lahiru Kumara and Angelo Mathews combined to bundle out England for a paltry 156 before unbeaten fifties from Pathum Nissanka and Sadeera Samarawickrama ensured an 8-wicket win with 24.2 overs to spare in Bengaluru.

Afghanistan, on the other hand, stunned another Asian rival in Pakistan when they rode on fifties from Ibrahim Zadran, Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Rahmat Shah to chase down a challenging target of 283 in Chennai.

The two sides met last month in the Asia Cup and also in a three-match series earlier this year in June. Before that they had met in just over a handful of ODI matches, including twice in the ODI World Cup. They, however, have never played an ODI at the venue in Pune.
