Afghanistan’s Mohammad Nabi Set to Retire from ODIs After Champions Trophy 2025

Afghanistan all-rounder Mohammad Nabi has announced he will retire from ODI cricket after the 2025 Champions Trophy in Pakistan. Nabi, who has been instrumental in Afghanistan’s rise on the global stage, will continue playing T20 internationals.

The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) confirmed Nabi’s decision to exit the 50-over format through chief executive Naseeb Khan, marking the end of an era for Afghan cricket.

"Yes, Nabi is retiring from ODIs after the Champions Trophy, and he informed the board about his desire," ACB's Naseeb Khan confirmed. "He told me a few months back that he wants to end his ODI career after the Champions Trophy, and we welcome his decision."

Nabi, 39, has left an indelible mark on Afghan cricket, representing his country in 165 ODIs. Over the years, he has amassed 3,549 runs at an average of 27.3 and has taken 171 wickets, establishing himself as one of Afghanistan's most reliable all-rounders. His impact goes beyond numbers, symbolising Afghanistan’s journey in international cricket.

The veteran’s decision comes at a pivotal moment, as Afghanistan are currently locked in an ODI series against Bangladesh. In the recent series opener on November 6, Nabi played a crucial role, stabilising the innings when Afghanistan were struggling at 71/5. His experience turned the game in Afghanistan's favour, highlighting just how valuable his contributions are even at the tail end of his ODI career.

Nabi’s retirement from the ODI format marks a significant transition for the Afghanistan team, but fans will still witness his skills in T20 cricket, where he remains an asset. "After the Champions Trophy, what I understand is that he is expected to continue his T20 career, and that is the plan until now," Naseeb Khan said.

As Afghanistan approaches the Champions Trophy, the spotlight will be on Nabi as he embarks on his final journey in ODI cricket. For a player who has been an essential figure in Afghanistan’s cricket story, the Champions Trophy will be a fitting farewell in one of the sport’s most prestigious tournaments.
