Mumbai won the Irani Cup after a gap of 27 years on Saturday, October 5 on the basis of first innings lead against Rest of India. The match between the reigning Ranji Trophy champions and Rest of India ended in a high-scoring draw but the 121-run lead they picked in the first innings, helped them clinch their 15th Irani Cup title.
Ajinkya Rahane, the captain of Mumbai, was also soon trending after the big win. The senior batter, who last played for India in July 2023, scored a crucial 97 runs in the first innings after Mumbai were reduced to 37/3 at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow.

Rahane partnered for 120 runs with Ajinkya Rahane, and then stitched a 130-run partnership with Sarfaraz Khan as Mumbai posted 537 runs in the first innings.
The star batter was also sharp while leading the team on field. The 165-run partnership between Dhruv Jurel and Abhimanyu Easwaran had put Rest of India in a strong position by taking them to 393/4.
But Rahane kept his cool and kept his trust in spinner Shams Mulani, who dismissed Jurel and Easwaran in quick succession. Rest of India soon lost the plot and were bundled out for 416.
Rahane - the captain - is often known for his exploits in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in 2020-21, but his record in domestic cricket.Out-of-favour Rahane has won four trophies in Indian domestic cricket since 2022. He led West Zone to Duleep Trophy 2022-23 win before guiding Mumbai to Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2022-23.
Earlier this year, Mumbai lifted their 42nd Ranji Trophy title under the watch of Rahane, and that win has been capped off with an Irani Cup triumph. The 36-year-old was also the captain of India C when they won the Deodhar Trophy in 2018.
Ajinkya Rahane is doing every bit to make a comeback in the Indian Test team. He has been playing county cricket in the UK and domestic matches in India. The WTC table-toppers are scheduled to play eight Test matches from mid-October to January first week, and even though the chance of his India comeback looks dim, Rahane would be hoping for one final run with the national team.
