Ajit Agarkar has hit pay dirt after being announced as the new chief selector of Indian cricket team as the former fast bowler is likely to see a substantial increase in paycheck in comparison to his predecessor Chetan Sharma.

As per reports, Ajit Agarkar is likely to get a pay hike of 200% in comparison to previous selector with an annual salary of Rs 3 crore. Former chief selector Sharma, who last picked the Test team for the West Indies series, had an annual salary of Rs 1 crore.

Former India pacer Agarkar earlier on Tuesday was appointed as the new chairman of the selection panel by the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), consisting of Sulakshana Naik, Ashok Malhotra, and Jatin Paranjape. The 45-year-old was the sole candidate to feature for the post and was cleared by all three members following the interview, which took place virtually on the same day of the announcement as Agarkar was in London.

Agarkar was offered the fat paycheck as the retired cricketer wasn't too sure about taking up the job. He earlier served among the coaching staff of Delhi Capitals and also had stints as commentator. As a chief selector, he wouldn't have any of those opportunities.

However, as per Cricbuzz, Agarkar was pursued into taking the important role by cricketing legends keeping in mind the future of the Indian cricket team. He was deemed favourite for the role by many due to his reputation as the former chief selector of the Mumbai Cricket Association. BCCI was also keen on roping a young candidate, who had prior experience of playing T20 cricket.

Agarkar in all likely had his first assignment as the chief selector as BCCI announced the T20 squad for the West Indies series a day after his appointment. Tilak Varma received his maiden call-up while Yashasvi Jaiswal also featured in the T20 squad for the first time after being selected for the Test squad earlier.
