Albie Morkel Joins CSK As Assistant Coach Ahead Of IPL 2027
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have appointed former South Africa all-rounder Albie Morkel as their assistant coach ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2027 season, bringing back a familiar face as the five-time champions revamp their coaching setup under new head coach Zaheer Khan.
Morkel's appointment is part of a wider restructuring of the franchise's support staff ahead of the upcoming season. CSK have also appointed former India pacer Mohit Sharma as their bowling coach and former England spinner Gareth Batty as an assistant coach.

The changes follow Zaheer's appointment as head coach after Chennai moved on from long-serving coach Stephen Fleming. The franchise is preparing for a fresh campaign after missing the IPL playoffs in recent seasons.
Albie Morkel's CSK Connection
Morkel is no stranger to the Chennai Super Kings setup. The South African represented the franchise from 2008 to 2013 and was part of the team that won consecutive IPL titles in 2010 and 2011. His experience as a powerful lower-order batter and a seam-bowling all-rounder made him a valuable member of the squad during his playing days.
He also represented South Africa in international cricket across all three formats, earning a reputation for his big-hitting ability and useful medium-pace bowling. His familiarity with CSK's culture and history could prove valuable as he transitions into a coaching role with the franchise.
Following his retirement from professional cricket, Morkel continued his involvement in franchise cricket. He was appointed head coach of Joburg Super Kings, CSK's sister franchise in South Africa's SA20 league, strengthening his coaching credentials within the wider Super Kings network.
CSK Begin New Coaching Era
Morkel's return comes amid significant changes to Chennai's backroom staff. The franchise has also parted ways with batting coach Michael Hussey and bowling coach Eric Simons, among other staff members, as Zaheer builds his coaching team.
