A landmark decision by the International Cricket Council (ICC) has redefined the hosting framework for India vs Pakistan matches in ICC events during the 2024-2027 cycle.
Amid strained diplomatic relations, the ICC approved a hybrid hosting model ensuring that matches involving these two cricketing giants are played at neutral venues.

The agreement covers marquee tournaments such as the ICC Men's Champions Trophy 2025 in Pakistan, the ICC Women's ODI World Cup 2025 in India, and the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka. The hybrid arrangement ensures that all matches involving India in Pakistan and Pakistan in India -- including group stage, semifinals, and finals -- will take place at neutral venues designated by the respective tournament hosts, subject to ICC approval.
The resolution marks the culmination of intense negotiations among the ICC, PCB, and BCCI, spurred by the BCCI's earlier stance against traveling to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy. This impasse led to weeks of deliberations, complicated further by political sensitivities and government involvement on both sides. However, the breakthrough allows the PCB to retain full hosting rights for the Champions Trophy while proposing a neutral venue, with the UAE and Sri Lanka emerging as frontrunners.
The hybrid model also paves the way for additional flexibility in future ICC events. For instance, Sri Lanka, as co-host for the 2026 T20 World Cup, could serve as the default venue for any India-Pakistan encounters. The arrangement is expected to extend to the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2028, awarded to Pakistan, ensuring continuity of this neutral venue precedent.
Interestingly, the agreement also hints at the possibility of a triangular or quadrangular T20I tournament featuring India, Pakistan, and other Asian nations, potentially hosted at neutral venues under similar arrangements. While the ICC will not officially oversee such events, the framework aligns with the new model.
The resolution, finalized just months before the Champions Trophy, alleviates uncertainty for fans and organizers alike. It reflects a pragmatic approach to managing political realities while preserving the integrity and global appeal of cricket's most anticipated rivalry.
