“All The Hard Work Has Paid Off”: Manav Suthar’s Dream Debut Headlines India’s Dominance Over Afghanistan

India tightened their grip on the one-off Test against Afghanistan at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur on June 7, producing another dominant display with the bat. After captain Shubman Gill won the toss and elected to bat, the hosts piled on the runs and reached 475/6 by lunch on Day 2. Gill, Rishabh Pant and Dhruv Jurel played key roles in putting India in a commanding position, while Afghanistan's Mohammad Saleem emerged as the visitors' most successful bowler.

Amid India's strong performance, the moment stood out above everything else - the Test debut of Rajasthan spin-bowling all-rounder Manav Suthar. The 23-year-old was handed his maiden Test cap by Kuldeep Yadav after being preferred over Harsh Dubey in the playing XI.

All The Hard Work Has Paid Off Manav Suthar Dream Debut Headlines India s Dominance Over Afghanistan

His selection not only rewarded years of consistent performances in domestic cricket and for India A but also highlighted India's long-term planning ahead of the upcoming two-Test series in Sri Lanka, where spin is expected to play a decisive role. For Suthar, the Afghanistan Test marked the fulfilment of a lifelong dream and the beginning of a new chapter in his cricketing journey.

Reward for Consistent Domestic Performances

Suthar entered international cricket with an impressive domestic record. The Rajasthan spinner has claimed 129 wickets in 29 first-class matches while establishing himself as one of the country's most promising spin prospects.

His breakthrough came during the 2022-23 Ranji Trophy season when he finished as Rajasthan's highest wicket-taker with 39 wickets in just six matches at an average of 20.33. He also contributed valuable runs lower down the order, showcasing his all-round abilities. Strong performances in the ACC Men's Emerging Teams Asia Cup and the Duleep Trophy further strengthened his case for national selection.

"All The Hard Work Has Paid Off"

Speaking to JioStar, Suthar reflected on the sacrifices and patience required to reach the highest level of the game. "I had a great domestic season. I performed well for India A too. My name was being discussed, and I knew the call could come anytime. It was a waiting game, but I stayed patient. Now, all the hard work in domestic cricket and for India A has paid off."

The spinner also recalled the emotional moment when he first learned about his selection for the Indian team. "My sister called me and told me my name had come up in the Indian team. Everyone was emotional. It's the best feeling of my life."

Inspired by Ashwin, Backed by Gill

Suthar credited Yuvraj Singh and Ravichandran Ashwin as his cricketing role models, citing their versatility and ability to adapt across formats as a major source of inspiration.
He also praised India captain Shubman Gill's leadership style.

"He reads the game well, understands the situation and trusts his players. Because he is so clear in his thinking, he makes your job very easy on the field."

With India preparing for a demanding Test schedule that includes spin-friendly assignments at home and in Sri Lanka, Suthar's debut could be the first step towards establishing himself as a long-term option in India's next generation of spin bowlers.

As Indian cricket continues its transition towards a younger core, the Rajasthan all-rounder now has the opportunity to turn years of domestic success into a lasting international career.
