World Cup 2023: Angelo Mathews time-out dismissal makes him first batter to be given out in the manner

By MyKhel Staff

ICC World Cup 2023 finally had its moment of unique controversy as Sri Lankan veteran Angelo Mathews became the first international cricketer to be timed out during Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh match at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on Monday (November 6).

The incident happened in the 25th over of the match when Angelo Mathews was coming out to bat after the dismissal of Sadeera Samarawickrama. However, the batter found the strap of his helmet broke as he walked out to bat and decided to wait for a replacement.

However, Shakib wasn't pleased with the long wait and decided to appeal to the umpire. The umpire soon declared Angelo Mathews out and asked Shakib if he wanted to go forward with his appeal as the Spirit of the game was in question. Shakib remained adamant and the umpire had to stay with their decision. This was overall 7th time a batter was timed out in first-class cricket.

As per the MCC rulebook, a batter could be given time out if he doesn't reach the crease three minutes after the dismissal or retirement of the last batter. However, as per playing conditions of the ICC World Cup 2023, the time-out rule is set at two minutes. We take a look at what MCC rulebook and WC playing conditions state.

"After the fall of a wicket or the retirement of a batter, the incoming batter must, unless Time has been called, be ready to receive the ball, or for the other batter to be ready to receive the next ball within 3 minutes of the dismissal or retirement. If this requirement is not met, the incoming batter will be out, Timed out," states the MCC rulebook.

ICC World Cup 2023 playing condition reads: "After the fall of a wicket or the retirement of a batter, the incoming batter must unless Time has been called, be ready to receive the ball or for the other batter to be ready to receive the next ball within 2 minutes of the dismissal or retirement. If this requirement is not met, the incoming batter will be out, Timed out."
