The ongoing ICC World Cup 2023 saw a fresh controversy during Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh match as Angelo Mathews became the first international cricketer to be adjudged time-out following an appeal by Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan.
Shakib AL Hasan was well within his right to appeal for dismissal as the ICC World Cup 2023 playing conditions state that a new batter must be out to bat within 2 minutes of dismissal or retirement of the last batter. However, fans were not impressed with the decision as they felt it went against the spirit of the game.

The incident happened in the 25th over of Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh match at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi when Angelo Mathews came out to bat and realised his helmet's strap is broken. He approached the dugout, asking for another helmet. The Bangladesh captain wasn't impressed with the delay and soon approached the on-field umpires for a time-out.
The umpires had to give him out as Shakib was well within the rules to ask for it. However, the umpires approached him again to confirm if he wishes to go ahead with the decision. It's understandable that umpires approached Shakib as the spirit of the game was in question but the Bangladesh captain remained adamant with his appeal.
Angelo Mathews walked back to the pavilion in disbelief and without facing a single delivery. He had his on-field conversation with Shakib Al Hasan on the appeal and reasoned that his helmet's strap was broken and was the reason behind the delay. However, Shakib Al Hasan showed no respite and asked Mathews to leave the field.
Sri Lanka, who were 135/5 at that stage, recovered to post a 279 all out with Charith Asalanka (108) firing his first century at the ICC World Cup 2023. Pathum Nissanka and Sadeera Samarawickram contributed 41 each to top the order while Dhananjaya de Silva delivered 36 in a crucial stand with the centurion as the duo added 78 runs for the sixth wicket.
