In a bizarre way, Sri Lanka all-rounder Angelo Mathews got dismissed timed out in their ICC World Cup 2023 match against Bangladesh on Monday.
Angelo Mathews came into bat wearing a wrong helmet and Bangladesh appealed a timed out against him. The umpires discussed between themselves and then ruled Mathews out.

The Sri Lanka player departed without facing a ball. This is the first time a timed-out dismissal has happened in international cricket.
After the falling of Sri Lanka's fourth wicket, Angelo Mathews was supposed to come out for batting. Matthews came out, but he brought the wrong helmet. And then, as a substitute from the Sri Lankan team was trying to replace the helmet with Matthews's original one, the Bangladesh team appealed to the umpires.
Matthews tried to explain Bangladesh Captain Shakib Al Hasan, but the Bangladesh captain didn't listen to him. The Bangladesh players decided against withdrawing the appeal and Matthews was rightfully given timed out by the umpires.
Timed Out dismissal is a type of dismissal in cricket. According to MCC laws 40.1.1 and 40.1.2, a new batter has to come to the crease within a stipulated 3 minutes time period after a wicket falls. If he fails to do so, the batter can be given out.
40.1.1 After the fall of a wicket or the retirement of a batter, the incoming batter must, unless Time has been called, be ready to receive the ball, or for the other batter to be ready to receive the next ball within 3 minutes of the dismissal or retirement. If this requirement is not met, the incoming batter will be out, Timed out.
40.1.2 In the event of an extended delay in which no batter comes to the wicket, the umpires shall adopt the procedure of Law 16.3 (Umpires awarding a match). For the purposes of that Law the start of the action shall be taken as the expiry of the 3 minutes referred to above.
The bowler also doesn't get credit for the wicket when timed-out happens. This is the first incident in international cricket.
