Last week, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) chose Kumble as the chief coach of the Indian team. The 45-year-old former skipper took charge yesterday (June 29) in Bengaluru.

Kumble teamed up with Caribbean-bound players including Test leader Virat Kohli at a preparatory camp in Bengaluru's National Cricket Academy (NCA). ('Jumbo' journey begins)

Ganguly was part of the BCCI's Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) which interviewed candidates for the coach's job. Sachin Tendulkar and VVS Laxman were the other two in the panel. Kumble pipped Ravi Shastri to the top job.

When Ganguly was asked about Kumble beginning his work on Wednesday, the left-hander wished him luck and said the former leg-spinner will take the Indian team forward.

"I wish him all the luck. He is the best in the world. He is one of the champions of Indian cricket and he will take this team forward," Ganguly told reporters in Kolkata.

Kumble's first assignment will be four Tests against West Indies next month. After that the Indian team has a hectic schedule with 13 Test matches to be played at home. New Zealand, Bangladesh, England and Australia are set to tour India.
