Anushka Sharma Skips IPL 2025 Opener while Virat Kohli leads RCB to Victory over KKR in Kolkata

By Payal Sen

The electrifying atmosphere of IPL 2025’s opening match was missing a familiar face—one often seen cheering passionately from the stands. As RCB celebrated a thrilling victory, fans couldn’t help but wonder: Why was she absent?

Anushka Sharma’s unwavering support has always been a highlight of RCB’s matches, yet this time, her seat remained empty. Was it a personal choice, an unforeseen commitment, or something more?

Anushka Sharma Virat Kohli KKR vs RCB IPL 2025

Anushka Sharma, the acclaimed Bollywood actress and wife of cricketer Virat Kohli, was conspicuously absent from the stands during the opening match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, where the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) secured a thrilling victory. Her absence sparked curiosity among fans and media alike, as she has been a steadfast supporter of her husband's team in previous seasons.

The reason for Anushka's absence traces back to early 2024, when she and Virat welcomed their second child, Akaay, on February 15. Following the birth, the family spent considerable time in London, seeking privacy and a semblance of normalcy away from the public eye.

During this period, Anushka relished the opportunity to experience life away from the constant spotlight, enjoying simple pleasures and family moments. Virat Kohli shared insights into this phase, expressing joy in being unrecognised and cherishing the ordinary moments amidst the joy of parenthood.

As their daughter Vamika approached the age of three in January 2024, plans were set in motion for her to begin nursery education. The family decided that Vamika would attend the prestigious Dhirubhai Ambani International School in Mumbai, a favoured institution among several celebrity families.

The school year was scheduled to commence in April, necessitating the family's return to India to facilitate Vamika's enrolment and adjustment to her new educational environment. This commitment to her daughter's early education and well-being took precedence, leading to her absence from the stadium. Despite not being physically present, Anushka's support for Virat and the RCB team remained unwavering.

In addition to personal commitments, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) implemented stricter regulations for IPL 2025. These new rules mandated that players travel in team buses and restricted family members' access to dressing rooms and the Player and Match Officials Area (PMOA) during matches.

Specifically, only accredited staff were allowed in these areas, and families and friends of the cricketers were required to travel separately and could only watch practices from designated hospitality boxes. These regulations further influenced Anushka's decision to support RCB from home, ensuring compliance with the new protocols while prioritising her family's needs.

Prior to the match between RCB and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at Eden Gardens, Virat Kohli engaged in a video call with Anushka and their children, according to sources. This virtual interaction provided a moment of familial connection and support, boosting Virat's morale ahead of the game. The call served as a reminder of the family's close bond, even amidst professional commitments.

In essence, Anushka Sharma's absence from the IPL 2025 opening match was a testament to her dedication to family responsibilities, particularly her daughter's educational beginnings. Yet, her spirit and support continued to uplift the RCB team, bridging the distance between the stands and her steadfast encouragement.
