Arshdeep Singh Set to Make Test Debut at The Oval in Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy Finale: Reports

By MyKhel Staff

India pacer Arshdeep Singh is set to make his much-anticipated Test debut in the fifth and final match of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, starting July 31 at The Oval.

The 25-year-old left-arm seamer has recovered from a hand injury that had kept him out of the previous game in Manchester. He was seen bowling at full tilt during India's optional net session on Tuesday (July 29), raising expectations about his inclusion in the playing XI.

Arshdeep Singh Set to Make Test Debut at The Oval

As per reports, Arshdeep - who played five First-Class games for Kent during the 2023-24 County Championship, where he picked up 13 wickets - was in contention for a debut during the fourth Test as well. However, the stitches on his injured hand meant he had to sit out. With the final Test around the corner and Arshdeep deemed fully fit, India's bowling lineup is likely to see another reshuffle.

Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep are the probable seamers alongside Arshdeep. The team may also take a late call on star pacer Jasprit Bumrah, depending on his workload and fitness ahead of the match.

Coach Jaswant Rai Confident in Arshdeep's Red-Ball Readiness

In an exclusive conversation with MyKhel last month, Arshdeep's coach Jaswant Rai shed light on the pacer's preparation for the red-ball format. According to Rai, Arshdeep's wrist work and ability to swing the ball in both directions make him a natural fit for Test cricket.

"The biggest weapon of Arshdeep in Test cricket is that he can swing the ball both ways. He uses his wrists very well. I think he will be successful with the Red Ball. We are waiting for his debut," said Rai.

The coach, who has worked closely with Arshdeep since his early teenage years, believes the left-arm quick has the tools to become a match-winner in Tests. Arshdeep has already shown his ability to perform under pressure in white-ball cricket, having played 63 T20Is and 9 ODIs. He was also part of India's T20 World Cup-winning squad.

Groomed for the Longest Format

Even before the England tour, Arshdeep had his sights set on red-ball cricket. Over the past month, he has undergone extensive training under the supervision of India's bowling coach Morne Morkel. His ability to consistently hit the 6m length, a vital zone for seamers in England, adds to his potency, especially on surfaces like The Oval.

Many observers see Arshdeep as India's most promising left-arm swing bowler since Zaheer Khan, and comparisons with the legendary pacer are not unfounded. His control, temperament, and natural variations make him a rare asset in India's pace battery.

As the fifth Test approaches, all eyes will be on Arshdeep Singh as he takes his next big leap. While the challenge will be stiff against a seasoned England lineup, Arshdeep's confidence and preparation suggest he's ready to take the red-ball stage by storm.
