Arunjith fastest man of Games

Guwahati, Feb 12 (UNI) Arunjith Sivadasan Nair of Kerala and Vineeta Sahni of Uttar Pradesh emerged as the fastest men and women respectively by winning the 100 meter event of the 33rd National Games here today.

In the cool afternoon at the Indira Gandhi stadium of Sarusajai, Arunjith was chased to the finishing line by an home town favourite Jagadish Basak of Assam but he faltered before the finishing line to end second best.

However, Vineeta's timing of 11.92 secs failed to threaten the Games record set by Kavita Pandya five years ago while Arunjith too could not get close to the Games or the National records.

At the end of the day, honours were shared as the traditional South India's domination over the track and field events were resisted by Uttar Pradesh, Orissa and Madhya Pradesh. But Kerela is still heading the athletic medal tally with four golds, one silver and two bronze, closely followed by Tamil Nadu with two golds and Uttar Pradesh with a lone gold.

However, in the absence of many top athletes, the overall standard of the athletic event has not been very encouraging and no new national record has been threatened.

In the high jump event, however Hari Shankar Ray of West Bengal set a new meet record by jumping over 2.14 meters.
