Fast and furious Mark Wood returned in style as England finished day 1 of the third Test of the Ashes 2023 against rivals Australia on top at the Headingley Cricket Ground in Leeds on Thursday (July 6).
With an aim to stay alive in the series, England captain Ben Stokes put Australia into bat again and Stuart Broad made in-roads in the very first over by removing David Warner.

Australia soon lost the top four inside lunch, but an onslaught after lunch from Travis Head and Mitch Marsh, who scored a hundred, took the team past 200. However, England were brought back into the game by a five-wicket haul from Wood as they bundled out Australia for 263.
England batters did not start well though as Ben Duckett and Harry Brook were sent back quickly, while Zack Crawley also followed them after some fight. Joe Root and Jonny Baistow showed some fight to take the hosts to 68/3 at stumps.
The duo still have a lot of work to do as they trail Australia by 195 runs heading into day 2, which may be crucial and best day for batting due to the conditions that will change in the final three days of the match.
Earlier in the series, England had suffered a 2-wicket defeat to Pat Cummins' World Test Champions Australia in the series opening thriller at the Edgbaston Cricket Ground in Birmingham followed by a 43-run loss at Lord's to go 0-2 down in the home Ashes.
