Ashes 2023: David Warner becomes Stuart Broad's bunny for 16th time - Watch video

By MyKhel Staff

David Warner fail to score big again in the ongoing Ashes 2023 series as the batter got out for just four runs on the opening day of England vs Australia third Test at Yorkshire's Headingley Stadium on Thursday (July 6). The 36-year-old opener was dismissed by English pacer Stuart Broad, who scalped him for the 16th time in his career.

The incident happened in the first over of the match as Warner edged a length delivery off the fifth delivery of the over straight to Zack Crawley standing at the second slip. The right-arm bowler has registered his name in the record books with the dismissals.

Warner, who made a promising start earlier as he hit the first ball for a boundary, was at fault for an audacious attempt with his shot as there was not much seam movement or swing by Broad off the delivery.

With his 16th dismissal off Warner, Broad is only the fourth bowler to dismiss an individual batter 16 or more times. Australia's legendary pacer and now-retired Glenn McGrath holds the record for dismissing Ashes rival Michael Atherton 19 times.

England's medium pacer from yesteryear, Alec Bedser dismissed Australian batting great Arthur Moris 18 times while West Indies' fierce and burly pacer bowler Curtly Ambrose is third on the list with 17 dismissals of former England captain Atherton 17 times.

Australia started the third Test on the front foot as they won the first two Tests to take 2-0 lead in Ashes 2023. They won the first Test in Edgbaston by two wickets as Usman Khawaja and Pat Cummins starred in the thrilling encounter while Steve Smith scored a century in the second Test as the visitors won the game on the final by 43 runs.

A defeat for England in the Headingley Test will end their chances of winning series as coach Brandon McCullum is facing criticism for the attack-at-all-cost approach, popularly known as 'Bazball'.
