Ashes: Spirit of cricket debate returns as England players reject customary beer party with Australia

Australian cricketers endured a long wait for their England counterparts to join them for customary post Ashes series drinks, only to be snubbed by the Three Lions who won the fifth and final Test by 49 runs on Monday.

A report in foxsports.com.au has further revealed that Australia players requested England to join them to join them for the customary drinks several times but their doors remained unlocked until Pat Cummins' side gave up.

“We don’t really care, we’ve got the urn, but after a hard-fought series it is pretty pathetic. Talk about the spirit of cricket," a source reportedly told foxsports.com.au.

However, England has refuted the claims saying that the retirement speeches went for long and the Australians had left by the time they finished. Notably, Stuart Broad and Moeen Ali finished their Test career with the Ashes 2023.

Foxsports.com.au has reported that England players left some time around 11 PM local time, more than four hours after the last ball of the series was bowled.

Ben Stokes refutes allegations

However, England captain Ben Stokes took to Twitter and clarified that the teams could not meet in the dressing room because of "multiple last time events' '. He added that the two teams decided to meet at a nightclub instead.

Beer snub not the only highlight of Ashes 2023

The Ashes 2023 happened to be quite an eventful series and there were multiple occasions when the two teams came at loggerheads. It all started with fast bowler Josh Hazlewood hurling some expletives while giving a send-off to Usman Khawaja. The pacer was heavily criticised for his act.

Later, Jonny Bairstow's controversial stumping also made headlines. Alex Carey took off the bails with an underarm throw as Bairstow casually left a short delivery and moved out of the crease towards his batting partner. The 'Spirit of Cricket' debate gained major momentum during this episode.

England coach Brendon McCullum was left fuming, and had said, “I can’t imagine we’ll be having a beer with them any time soon.”

Former Australia captain was again booed, sledged and reminded oh his suspension following his Sandpapergate scandal.
