Ashes: Australians concede they have been outfoxed in Lords Test

By Super Admin

London, July 18 (ANI): Having lost eight wickets for a paltry score of 156 on the second day of the second Ashes Tests being played at Lords here, Australia has conceded that they have been outfoxed by England's short-pitched bowling plan.

Should they lose the Test, it will be a first for the Australians after 75 years. The last time they lost a Test at Lords was in 1934, when left arm spinner Hedley Verity claimed 15 wickets on a wet pitch.

Five of Australia's batsmen fell to hook or pull shots off short balls.

"They obviously had some good plans and they executed them quite well ... they seemed to bowl a lot of short balls and they had two fieldsmen back and a short leg.Today, we had a few dismissals with the cross-bat shot," the Daily Telegraph quoted Australia's top scorer Michael Hussey (51), as saying.

"It's something we are going to have to rectify in the second innings. The pull shot is a very instinctive shot, you try to just pick up the length as quick as you can and instinct and your reflexes take over,'' he added.

England fast bowler James Anderson (4-36) claimed England's bowling plans had worked a treat.

"Just our plans in general have pretty much worked out. We asked a lot of questions of their batsman. We had a long chat after the first Test in Cardiff, obviously we didn't bowl well enough there. The plans that we talked about, but we didn't execute at Cardiff, we executed a lot better today,'' he said.

Hussey, however, claimed the Australians could match England's fighting performance to escape with a draw in Cardiff.

Australia (8-156) still need 70 runs to avoid following-on and only a major fightback will prevent them from losing just their second Test at Lord's in more than 100 years.

"We watched England fight their way out of a pretty big hole in Cardiff and we have got to show a similar sort of resolve. It's important to try to scrape our way past the follow-on first. We are going to have to bat very well in the second innings. We are going to have to show a lot of fight and a lot of pride in our performance,'' Hussey said. (ANI)
