Ashwin clarifies his 'die on the field' comment, asks 'not to assume and mislead'

Bengaluru, June 26: Indian offspinner R Ashwin has clarified his statement of ready "to die on the field" for captain MS Dhoni. He said his comments were misinterpreted and felt some of them were "blowing things way out of proportion".

After India lost the 2nd ODI and the series to Bangladesh, Ashwin had addressed the media on Tuesday (June 23) in Mirpur and pledged his support to the beleaguered Indian skipper Dhoni after critics had asked for his removal.

"If you don't go behind your leader (now) then when will you? So as far as I am concerned it's like an army, if you don't go behind your leader then you are definitely going to get shot. If my captain asks me to die on the field, I'll do it.

"It's not just now, any captain you have to go behind him. If he asks you to die on the field, then you have to be prepared to do it," Ashwin had said on the eve of the 3rd and final ODI in Mirpur.

Clarifying that statement, Ashwin today took to Twitter to say that he meant he would support every Indian captain and not just one individual (Dhoni). He asked people "not to assume and mislead".

"The statement means follow your leader to the grave, and doesn't imply to any individual. All this is blowing things way out of proportion," Ashwin wrote on his Twitter page on Friday.

"With all due respect to all the fans,interpretation is a power all of us possess to make things simple and not to assume and mislead. Thanks," he added in another tweet.
