Ashwin to resume bowling without any penalty time if he returns to Rajkot for third Test, confirms Dinesh Karthik

Ravichandran Ashwin, who pulled out of the ongoing third Test to be with his unwell mother, will be allowed to bowl immediately without any mandatory waiting period in case he returns to Rajkot for the match against England.

Ashwin picked his 500th Test wicket on Day 2 (Friday), but was forced to withdraw from the Rajkot Test and leave for Chennai to be with his unwell mother.

As per the rules, a player is supposed serve a penalty time after spending time away from the field. "A player’s unserved Penalty time shall be limited to a maximum of 90 minutes," the MCC law says.

However, the umpires have given the 37-year-old an exemption due to his unique case. Dinesh Karthik confirmed the development while commentating on Day 3 of the Test at the Niranjan Shah Stadium. India are continuing to play the Test match with 10 players in the absence of Ashwin.

A substitute fielder isn't allowed to bat or ball as per the ICC rules. Only a concussion substitute gets the permission to participate in the match in full capacity. A substitute coming in for any other injury or reason, is just allowed to field.

The Indian bowling unit did a tremendous job in the absence of their ace spinner on Day and bundled out England for 319 runs only. England were 207/2 at the end of Day 2 in reply to India's first innings total of 445.

Jasprit Bumrah got the wicket of Joe Root, before Kuldeep Yadav stepped up to pick the wickets of Jonny Bairstow and centurion Ben Duckett. Ravindra Jadeja dismissed England captain Ben Stokes (41) before Mohammed Siraj picked four wickets to wrap up the England tail.
