Afghanistan will be among the six teams battling to be Asia's best heading into the ICC World Cup 2023, but on current form they may find it hard at the Asia Cup 2023, scheduled to start on Wednesday (August 30).
Afghanistan led by Hashmatullah Shahidi have landed in Lahore, where they will play their first round Group B fixtures at the Gaddafi Stadium against Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. The Afghans head into the continental show-piece fresh from a 0-3 series loss to Pakistan.

This will be Afghanistan's fourth appearance in the Asia Cup, having made their debut in the competition in 2014 when they finished fourth among five teams. This will also be their third ODI format Asia Cup appearance.
As we gear up for the upcoming Asia Cup 2023, it's crucial to examine each participating team's strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT). This article will focus on Afghanistan - a team that has shown immense potential and growth in recent years.
Strengths: One of Afghanistan's significant strengths lies in their spin bowling department. With world-class spinners like Rashid Khan and Mujeeb Ur Rahman at their disposal, they have consistently troubled opposition batsmen across various conditions.
While they banked on only spinners earlier, the Afghans have a capable top order now thanks to the in-form duo of Rahmanhullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran, who have piled on runs in the last year. Skipper Hashmatullah and Rahmat Shah also have the ability to steady the ship in the top order.
Weaknesses: Despite having a strong bowling line-up, Afghanistan suffers from a lack of experienced fast bowlers who can exploit swing-friendly conditions. Their death bowling has been a shambles. They have brought in Karim Janat to address the issue, but they will surely miss someone like Naveen Ul Haq.
Moreover, their batting line-up often tends to rely heavily on few key players which could be detrimental if these players fail to deliver, especially when they need to finish games. Only Mohammad Nabi and sometimes Janat as well as Rashid have tried to fill the void.
Opportunities: The Asia Cup 2023 presents an excellent opportunity for Afghanistan to prove it's mettle against more established teams and be the dark-horses. A good performance here by using their spin combination well can significantly boost their confidence ahead of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 in India.
Threats: The pressure of performing well on such a big stage and competing against more seasoned sides with plenty of experience could potentially act as a threat. They have no room to experiment as they are in a tough group with Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, but in 2018 they got out of a similar group.
