Afghanistan open their campaign against Bangladesh, who are desperate for a win to stay alive in the Asia Cup 2023 when the two sides clash in the first round group stage match at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, Pakistan on Sunday (September 3).
Shakib Al Hasan's Bangladesh fell to Sri Lanka by 5 wickets in their tournament opener after posting just 164 runs on the board. Now, they go up against Hashmatullah Shahidi's Afghanistan, who come into the tournament on the back of 0-3 series loss to Pakistan last month.

The Afghanistan side will, however, be confident when facing Bangladesh thanks to their 2-1 away series win earlier last month. The Bangladesh side has had the edge over Afghanistan in ODIs whether at home or neutral venue.
The two nations have so far met in 14 one day international matches with Bangladesh holding an edge of 8-6 against Afghanistan. In three 3-match bilateral series, Bangladesh has won 2, while Afghanistan won the most recent one in July 2023. All three series ended 2-1.
In neutral venues, where both sides have clashed in the World Cup, Bangladesh has won both the times in Manuka Oval during the 2015 World Cup and the Rose Bowl in 2019 World Cup. The two sides have also clashed three times in Asia Cup matches.
In 2014 Asia Cup, Afghanistan beat Bangladesh by 32 runs. In 2018 edition, the two teams shared a win each with Afghanistan winning the first meeting and Bangladesh avenging the loss in the second fixture.

A close match to call, but the team batting first will start favourites and the best spin bowling attack on the day will dominate the contest. Going by recent history, Afghanistan start slight favourites. However, Bangladesh will hope their experience of playing at the venue will help them.
If the wicket favours the spinners, then Afghanistan will hold a slight advantage thanks to Rashid Khan and Mujeeb Ur Rahman. Bangladesh too have quality in spin led by Shakib. But if the wicket offers quicker bowlers assistance, then Bangladesh have the better attack.
It is expected to be a tough contest which may see the team batting first have the edge as teams chasing have won 30 times as opposed to the 32 times when a team defended a total. The pressure will be on Bangladesh, who need to a win to keep their Asia Cup hopes alive.
