Asia Cup 2023: Kohli, Rohit, Jadeja & Shakib Among Players Closing In On Records

Asia Cup 2023 begins on Wednesday (August 30) with first round group stage matches and continue with the Super Four stage, scheduled to start on September 6 followed by the final on September 17.

The tournament, which will be played in ODI format, provides a platform for five of six teams ahead of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, scheduled to be held in October-November.

Players approaching records and milestones heading into Asia Cup 2023

The likes of India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan will use the Asia Cup 2023 to address several aspects of their respective squads heading into the show-piece.

In Asia Cup 2023, the first round sees the six teams split into two groups as Pakistan, India, and Nepal are pitted in Group A, while Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka are in Group B.

India will aim for a record-extending eight title, while Sri Lanka will look to go level with the Men in Blue in the continental tournament. Also, many players will look to break major individual records during the tournament.

India's Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja as well as Bangladesh's Shakib Al Hassan and Pakistan's Imam Ul Haq all close in on milestones heading into Asia Cup 2023. Here, we take a look at major records that can be broken during Asia Cup 2023.

Virat Kohli eyes 13000 ODI runs

Kohli is 102 runs short of the 13000-run mark. If he achieves the feat, Kohli will become the fifth player in ODIs to reach milestone, joining the likes of Sachin Tendulkar (18426), Kumar Sangakkara (14234), Ricky Ponting (13734), and Sanath Jayasuriya (13430).

Additionally, Kohli can also become the fastest to 13000 ODI runs. Tendulkar holds that record at the moment in terms of innings (321). Kohli has so far amassed 12898 runs in just 265 ODI innings. Kohli is also 101 runs short of the 1000-run mark in Sri Lanka.

Kohli, who has so far smashed 76 international centuries across three formats, is 4 tons away from 50 hundreds in ODIs. If he can achieve the feat, Kohli can surpass Tendulkar, who is currently the leader for most hundreds in ODIs with 49 centuries in the 50-over format.

Rohit Sharma close to major milestones

The Indian skipper Rohit is 163 runs away from reaching the 10000-run mark in ODIs. If he achieves the feat, Rohit will become just the 15th player to cross the milestone.

Rohit, who has scored 9837 runs in ODIs at an average of 48.69, is also on the verge of becoming the sixth Indian to register 10000 ODI runs after Sachin Tendulkar (18426), Virat Kohli (12898), Sourav Ganguly (11363), Rahul Dravid (10889) and Mahendra Singh Dhoni (10773).

Rohit is also 255 runs away from completing 1000 runs in Asia Cup. If he achieves the feat, the skipper can become the first Indian player to reach this landmark. Tendulkar currently sits on top with 971 runs.

The Indian skipper can also become only the third player to achieve the feat after Sri Lanka greats Sanath Jayasuriya and Kumar Sangakkara, who are the only players to cross 1000 runs in Asia Cup (ODI).

Ravindra Jadeja eyes 200 ODI wickets

Ravindra Jadeja, who has claimed 194 ODI wickets so far, is just six scalps away from 200 wickets in ODI cricket. If he achieves the feat, Jadeja can surpass the likes of Steve Waugh (195), Dale Steyn (196), and Dwayne Bravo (199) in the most wickets list for ODIs.

Jadeja will also become the fifth left-arm spinner to complete 200 wickets after the likes of Sanath Jayasuriya (323), Daniel Vettori (305), Shakib (305) and Abdur Razzak (207).

Jadeja also is close to entering the top five wicket-takers list in Asia Cup (ODI) history as he sits level with Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan on 19 wickets. The duo can surpass the likes of Abdur Razzak (22), Irfan Pathan (22), Sanath Jayasuriya (22) and many others.

Shakib closes in on couple of milestones

Bangladesh all-rounder and skipper Shakib is also on the verge of completing 4000 ODI runs away from home (neutral and away venues). The left-hander, who has so far scored 3832 runs away from home in ODIs, can become the second Bangladeshi to achieve this feat after Tamim Iqbal (4323).

Shakib, who has claimed 305 ODI wickets, can also steer clear of Daniel Vettori to become the second-highest wicket-taker among left-arm spinners in ODIs after Sanath Jayasuriya.

Imam-ul-Haq close to 3000 ODI runs

Pakistan opener Imam-ul-Haq is 116 runs away from completing 3000 ODI runs. If he achieves the feat within the first four matches, Imam, who has scored 2884 runs in 62 innings, can become the second-fastest to 3000 ODI runs behind former South Africa star Hashim Amla, who holds the record, having got to the landmark in 61 innings.
