Atapattu likely to make test comeback against Aussies

By Staff

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka, Oct 3 (Reuters) Former Sri Lanka captain Marvan Atapattu is likely to return to test cricket against Australia next month, chairman of selectors Ashantha de Mel told Reuters today.

The 36-year-old Atapattu made himself unavailable for Sri Lanka's last test series against Bangladesh in July and then asked for release from his central contract amid speculation he was set to join the rebel 20/20 Indian Cricket League.

Earlier this week, however, captain Mahela Jayawardene called for Atapattu to make himself available for Sri Lanka and selectors are now set to meet with him to night to discuss his future.

''We'd like him to play in Australia where we feel his skill and huge experience will be vital in Australian conditions,'' de Mel told Reuters.

''I think it is likely that he will play in Australia.'' De Mel also revealed the selectors want Sanath Jayasuriya, 38, to concentrate on limited overs cricket, although they have indicated there is a chance of him playing against England at home in December.

''We've had a chat with him and we need to see where he can fit,'' revealed de Mel. ''There is a chance of him playing a farewell test against England but we want him to concentrate on one-day cricket.'' REUTERS BJR PM1620
