AUS vs ENG: Australia exact revenge on England by pushing them out of World Cup 2023, set a foot in semis

AUS vs ENG: Australia exacted revenge over England by handing them a 33-run win and pushing them out of the World Cup 2023. In the match played at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Saturday, June 4, England were bundled out for 253 in 48.1 overs while chasing a 287-run target.

The defeat was England's fifth in the row. Overall, the defending champions have lost six of their seven matches. Their only win came against Bangladesh in their second match. England are also facing the threat of missing out on a berth in Champions Trophy 2025.

Notably, the top eight teams at the end of league stage would qualify for the eight-team event scheduled to be hosted in Pakistan. England are currently the bottom-ranked team in the ten-team World Cup 2023. Bangladesh are ninth with one win in seven matches, while Netherlands are eighth with two wins in as many matches. Sri Lanka are seventh with two wins in seven matches. Each of these four teams are left with two matches each.

On the flip side, Australia have a foot in the semi-final now. They just have to win one of their last two games against Afghanistan and Bangaldesh to join India and South Africa in the semi-final.

England had knocked out then defending champions Australia from the 2019 World Cup. England defeated Australia in the semi-final by eight wickets. This time, Australia delivered the knockout punch against the defending champions to knock out of the 2023 World Cup.

Being asked to bat first, Australia lost their openers Travis Head (11) and David Warner (15) early. But, Steve Smith (44), Marnus Labuschagne (71), Cameron Green (47) and Marcus Stoinis (35) chipped in with handy contributions to help Australia post a 286-run total in 49.3 overs. Chris Woakes picked four wickets in the match. Mark Wood and Adil Rashid picked two wickets each.

In reply, England lost two early wickets before an 84-run partnership between Dawid Malan (50) and Ben Stokes (64) brewed. But Malan's wicket in the 23rd over was followed by Jos Buttler's (1) departure on the first ball of the 26th over.

Another 63-run partnership between Stokes and Moeen Ali (42) kept England afloat for a while but the two southpaws and Liam Livingstone departed within four overs as England were reduced to 186/7. Chris Woakes (32) and Adil Rashid (20) gave their best shot but could not save England from succumbing to their fifth defeat on the bounce.

Pacers Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, and Pat Cummins picked two wickets apiece. Spinner Adam Zampa (3/21) finished as the team's highest wicket-taker once again. He has picked at least three wickets for five times in a row in this World cup.
