AUS vs PAK, World Cup 2023: How Pakistan's dismal bowling made them suffer

By Chaithanya Gulapala

Pakistan players were far from reaching their sweet spot while locking horns with Australia in the 18th match of the ICC World Cup 2023 at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru.

It was a fantastic wicket to bat on where the Aussies were rampant against the hapless Pakistani bowlers who failed to tick the boxes.

Pakistan vs Australia

As if that weren't enough, Pakistani players lacked discipline on the field and paid the
ultimate price. The real turning point of the game was witnessed when Usama Mir made a huge blunder by dropping David Warner early on in the innings.

Had it not been for putting down an absolute sitter, it would have at least stopped Australia's carnage to some extent. Mir's sloppy effort gave David Warner a breather to go about his work with a positive mindset as he capitalized on the lifeline to better effect.

Haris Rauf might have accounted for 3 dismissals but gave away too many runs, conceding 83 in 8 overs at an expensive economy of 10.40. Usama Mir had a bad day at the office wherein he not only dropped a catch but also leaked too many runs.
The right-arm leg-break bowler registered 1/82 in 9 overs at an economy of 9.10.

Haris Rauf's 3/83 was the record for the second-most expensive bowling figures by a Pakistan bowler in a World Cup innings after Hasan Ali's 1/84 against India in the 2019 World Cup.

On the other side of the coin, Usama Mir bowled the joint third-most expensive spell by a Pakistani bowler in a World Cup innings, alongside Wahab Riaz's 3/82 against England in the 2019 World Cup.

While David Warner made Pakistan pay dearly with his impeccable 163 off 124 (14 fours, 9 sixes), Pakistan did manage to fight back through towards the fag end of the innings, particularly when it looked like the Aussies could have munched on a lot more at one stage.

Mitchell Marsh looked good for his 121 off 108 (10 fours, 9 sixes). The opening 259-run partnership between Warner and Marsh manoeuvred the Men in Yellow to post 367/9 in 50 overs. Shaheen Shah Afridi was the pick of the bowlers for Pakistan as he registered 5/54.
