Australia coach Darren Lehmann hospitalised with Deep Vein Thrombosis

Sydney, Jan 23: Australia's head coach Darren Lehmann was today hospitalised with Deep Vein Thrombosis and is "stable", Cricket Australia (CA) said.

"Australia Head Coach Darren Lehmann has been hospitalised with Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)," CA said in a media release issued on Saturday after the end of the India-Australia 5th ODI which the hosts won by 6 wickets. The hosts claimed the series 4-1.

"Lehmann reported a swollen left calf to the team medical staff ahead of the 5th ODI at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) on Saturday and was immediately referred for a scan that revealed the issue," it added.

He was admitted to the Royal Prince Albert Hospital in Sydney for observation overnight during the India innings in today's match and will receive treatment for the condition.

CA's Chief Medical Officer Doctor John Orchard said: "DVT is not an uncommon condition and it is important to diagnose it early so that it can be safely managed. On that basis we were fortunate to have PRP Imaging next to the Sydney Cricket Ground so we could get the scan done promptly.

"Darren is stable but he has been advised not to fly in the short term and will therefore require a lay-off before he can return to coaching."

Lehmann's wife Andrea was notified of the situation and the Australia players were told following the completion of Saturday's match, CA said.

In Lehmann's absence, Acting Head Coach will be the squad's batting coach Michael Di Venuto during the T20I series against India which starts in Adelaide on January 26 (Tuesday).

Executive General Manager, Team Performance at Cricket Australia Pat Howard said: "Our first thoughts and concerns are obviously with Darren and his family - health is more important than any cricket match. Everyone at Cricket Australia wishes him a speedy recovery."
