Australia To Host England In Historic 150th Anniversary Test At MCG

Australia will mark the 150th anniversary of their first Test match by hosting England at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in March 2027. The MCG was the site of Australia's inaugural red-ball game in March 1877, where they triumphed over England by 45 runs but lost a subsequent Test at the same venue.

In 1977, Australia celebrated the centenary of their first Test match by defeating England at the MCG. Cricket Australia has now confirmed plans for another significant celebration to conclude the team's 2026-27 season. "The 150th anniversary Test match at the MCG in March 2027 will be a wonderful celebration of the pinnacle format of the game at one of the world's great sporting arenas and we can't wait to host England on that occasion," said Nick Hockley, chief executive of Cricket Australia.

The announcement coincides with Cricket Australia's confirmation of venues for key fixtures up to the 2030-31 season. The MCG will continue to host the traditional Boxing Day Test, while the Sydney Cricket Ground will stage the New Year's Test.
