Australia is set for yet another ODI World Cup semi-final when they face South Africa in the last four match of the ICC World Cup 2023 at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Thursday (November 16).
Pat Cummins' side were written off after the manner of their defeats at the start of the tournament. But the World Champions fought back when they were down and out to become the third team to book the semi-final berth in this edition.

Australia opened their campaign with thumping defeats to tournament favourites India and South Africa, before they set off on a winning streak to book their record semifinal appearance. So, what's their route to the semifinal in 2023?

Australia, who are one of the founding members of the Cricket World Cup, have reached the semi-final stage of the show-piece tournament a record-equalling 9 times in 13 attempts. They have in fact reached the last four in seven of the last eight editions since 1996.
The five-time champions have only missed out on qualifying for the semi-final in four editions so far. While they made a group stage exit in 1979, 1983 and 1992, Australia has reached as far as the quarter-final stage in 2011.

Having lost the semi-final in the last edition, Australia will look to better that and get closer to lifting a record-extending sixth World Cup title when they face South Africa.
Standing in their path to the trophy after the semifinal in the final on Sunday (November 19) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, will be either India or New Zealand, who will be playing in the other semi-final.
