Australia squad for West Indies T20Is: David Warner returns for T20 World Cup 2024 audition, Marsh named captain

Australia squad for West Indies T20Is: Australia announced their squad for 3-match T20I series against West Indies on Wednesday, January 25. Veteran opener David Warner, who retired from Test and ODI cricket earlier this month, has returned to give an audition for the T20 World Cup 2024.

Josh Hazlewood has also returned, but the likes of regular captain Pat Cummins, Steve Smith and MItchell Starc have been rested. Mitchell Marsh will lead the Australia T20I side in Cummins' absence.

Chief selector George Bailey admitted that the squad was named keeping in mind the T20 World Cup 2024. He said the performance of the players will be closely watched in the IPL 2024 as well.

“We see these matches as an opportunity to narrow down on those who may be part of the T20 World Cup squad later this year," Bailey said.

“There are a further three T20 internationals in New Zealand following this West Indies series where we will continue to build towards the T20WC as required.

“It is likely we will use the block of six games to provide opportunity to players in some different roles and positions.

“We will then be keeping a close eye on the IPL before choosing a World Cup squad.”

AUS vs WI: Glenn Maxwell named in Australia's T20I squad

Glenn Maxwell, who made headlines on Monday for being admitted in an Adelaide hospital following an alcohol-related incident in a pub, has been named in the T20I squad. He isn't part of the preceding ODI fixtures as a part of his workload management.

Matt Short, Matthew Wade, Tim David and bowlers Sean Abbott, Jason Behrendorff and Nathan Ellis will get the chance to show their wares ahead of the T20 World Cup scheduled to take place in the USA and West Indies in June.
