Australia Squad World Cup 2023: Warner included in 15-member team, Tanveer Sangha misses out

Australia have announced their India-bound World Cup 2023 squad on Wednesday (September 6), and veteran opener David Warner has retained his place.

Australia picked a preliminary roster of 18 players for the white-ball tour of South Africa last month, a rolodex intended to be cut down to 15 prior to the World Cup.

The early hours of Wednesday saw Cricket Australia disclose that Tanveer Sangha, Aaron Hardie, and Nathan Ellis wouldn't be joining the upcoming tour, and all-rounder Sean Abbott got the spotlight in the 15-member team.

Both Adam Zampa and Ashton Agar have been enlisted as leading spinners. Furthermore, joining the tour will be Josh Inglis as a backup wicketkeeper, along with primary gloveman Alex Carey.

Australia have a quartet of stars who are nursing an injury, but all of Steve Smith, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Glenn Maxwell are expected to recover before the World Cup.

Indian-origin player Tanveer Sangha was not picked in the final squad despite a decent debut in the South Africa series, while veteran opener David Warner has found himself in the team that will be hoping to conquer the world in India.

Australia's chief of selectors George Bailey is hopeful of the quartet to recover ahead of the grand tournament.

"Pat Cummins, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc and Glenn Maxwell are on track in their return to play programs. All are well placed to come back online in the coming weeks and potentially for selection in the upcoming series against India," Bailey said.

"There are eight one-day matches still to play in South Africa and India before the final squad is due to be declared. They are followed by two World Cup practice games, which offers plenty of opportunity to continue the build for the tournament," he added.
